The war through the eyes of Ukrainians

Ukrainians are enduring terrible trials, paying an unimaginable price for the opportunity to live in their own country. Their stories need to be heard around the world.

Cities like Bucha, Hostomel, Irpin, Borodyanka, Mariupol, Chernihiv, and countless others once symbolized progress and hope. Today, these names evoke painful memories of destruction and human suffering.

The realities in Ukraine are brutal: thousands have been injured by shelling. Many live in conditions without access to essential medical services and medications, posing a true challenge for those battling severe illnesses.

Alina, 12 years old

I have always loved drawing, and even back in school, I began thinking about becoming a designer. During the war, I enrolled in online graphic design courses. Drawing has become my way of expressing emotions and distracting myself from the constant stress. I dream of going to university and combining my love for art with my desire to help people. I plan to work on social projects that address important issues, such as supporting displaced children.

Before the war, my life was simple and happy. I went to school, and after classes, I would rush to rehearsals at the cultural center, where my friends and I prepared for performances. We laughed, dreamed, strolled in the park, and ate ice cream. I wanted to become a dancer. Then the war came, and everything changed. We had to leave our home. Instead of a stage, there was a basement for shelter, and carefree laughter was replaced by fear. But even now, dancing helps me keep my spirits up. When I move to the rhythm of the music, it feels like everything can still change.

Before the war, my life was like a fairy tale. I played with toy cars, built castles out of blocks, and waited for my dad to come home from work so he could carry me on his shoulders. My mom and I would go to the playground, where I met friends and laughed as I fell into the sand. But one day, everything became loud and scary. We stopped going outside to play, and instead of my usual games, I drew houses with peaceful skies. Now, I dream of riding on my dad's shoulders again and running in the park, like before, when the world was safe and kind.

Before the war, I was living my dream: shooting weddings, portraits, and landscapes. Photography was my world, and every shot told its own story. I loved capturing genuine smiles and moments of happiness. My friends and I often traveled out of town, where I found the perfect spots for photo sessions. But the war shattered everything. Instead of couples in love, I now see faces filled with pain and despair. I began documenting destruction and the stories of people who lost everything. Photography has become my way of showing the world the truth. I dream of capturing joy again, but for now, I capture the heavy moments of life.

Tetiana, 17 years old

Before the war, I was just an ordinary seventeen-year-old girl. I was finishing school, dreaming of getting into university, laughing a lot with friends, and preparing for graduation. We were planning our summer: trips, parties, nights by the fire. I had even started packing for a student life full of adventures. Then everything stopped. The war took away our dreams and carefree days. Instead of choosing a university, I had to think about how to protect my loved ones. I learned to be strong and to help others, even though I was just a child not so long ago. Now, my dream is to feel freedom again and have hope for the future.

Denys, 35 years old

Before the war, I worked as a reporter and photographer, telling the stories of ordinary people and capturing the beauty of our country through my photos. I dreamed of creating a photo album that would showcase the sincerity and diversity of our lives. My days were filled with travels, new acquaintances, and the search for unique shots. When the war began, my cameras became tools of a different battle. I now capture destruction, tears, and the incredible courage of people. Every photo I take is now a testament for the world. I still capture moments, but no longer for beauty—it's to preserve the truth that must never be forgotten.

A Dream of Peace

The war has forced millions of Ukrainians to leave their homes in search of safety. Daily explosions and shelling have turned peaceful lives into a struggle for survival. Families have been separated, and people have left everything they had to save themselves and their children from danger.

Despite the pain and loss, we do not lose faith. We all dream that the war will end, and every Ukrainian will be able to return home. Together, we will rebuild our country, make it strong, independent, and ready for new victories, remembering what we are fighting for.

Author of the project

Hello, my name is Dmitry, I am 51 years old, a Ukrainian from Kharkiv. The story of creating this site began with my personal experience and the deep emotions evoked by the war. Kharkiv is my hometown, the place where I grew up, built my family, and lived my life. I remember every street, every corner of this beautiful city, and even in my worst nightmares, I could never have imagined that one day it would become a center of destruction and human suffering. When the war reached us, I saw firsthand how the peaceful existence of thousands of people was shattered in an instant. These were terrifying scenes: homes turning to rubble, people losing everything they had, and entire families being forced to leave their homes in search of safety. Pain and fear filled hearts, but along with them came an incredible strength and the desire to fight for the future.
I felt that I had to do something more than just watch what was happening. I realized that the reality of war needed to be heard around the world. People must know the truth, understand what we are going through, and with this understanding came the awareness of the need to help those who are suffering. My personal experiences, the stories of my friends, neighbors, and ordinary people of Kharkiv became the motivation to act. That is why I created this site—not only to share the stories of those enduring this pain but also to raise funds for rebuilding our homes and providing humanitarian and medical aid. For me, this project is not just a platform; it’s something more. It’s a way to support my people, to show the world that we are unbroken, that we have the strength and spirit to rebuild our country.
It’s important to me that every Ukrainian, every family who has lost everything because of the war, knows they are not alone, that together we can overcome these challenges. We are fighting for our right to live in our own country, for the future we dream of building: a strong, independent, and peaceful Ukraine. Despite all the hardships, we keep our faith and hope. This site has become my personal contribution to the fight for this future, and I sincerely believe that together we can restore our homes, our cities, and our hearts.
